Student Identification Process for ENL Services and Support

Programs and Services: In Suffern Central, we provide English as a New Language (ENL) programs that use strategies for English language development with native language support so that students develop language and content knowledge in English.

Student Identification: Suffern Central School District screens incoming students according to the NYS Part 154 Regulations. A Home Language Questionnaire is given at initial enrollment, followed by a family interview, student interview and NYSITELL (New York State Identification Test for English Language Learners) assessment to determine the student’s level of proficiency in English.

HQL–Home Language Questionnaire determines what languages are spoken in the home, other than English
Family Interview–Determines the family’s history and educational background
Student Interview–Determines student’s ability to converse, their preferences, favorites
NYSTELL–Assessment that determines initial level of proficiency in English
